No. We numb the area with local anaesthesia before removing any decay. The procedure is comfortable; mild sensitivity afterward is short-lived.
Very early enamel decay (white spot lesions) can remineralise with fluoride. Once through the enamel into dentine, it cannot heal — it needs treatment.
Untreated decay progresses from enamel to dentine to the nerve — causing pain, abscess, and eventually tooth loss. Early treatment is always simpler and cheaper.
